Thomas (Toby) John Richards, Jr., 71, passed away peacefully on May 8, 2026, at his home in Tucson, Arizona, with his devoted wife, Margaret (Margie) by his side, following a courageous battle with brain cancer. Toby and Margie celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on October 4, 2025—a milestone that reflected their enduring love and partnership.

Toby’s life was defined by his deep commitment to his family, his passion for hot rods, and his unwavering dedication to helping others.

He was born on August 2, 1954, in Woodruff, Wisconsin, to Thomas and Bertha (Peter) Richards. As the eldest of six children, Toby spent most of his life in Mercer, Wisconsin, where he built both his home and his reputation. He graduated from Mercer High School in 1972 and continued his education at Gogebic Community College in Ironwood. Shortly thereafter, he began his career in carpentry, ultimately establishing and operating Richards Construction for over 30 years. Through his skilled craftsmanship and strong work ethic, Toby left a lasting mark on the Mercer community and surrounding areas.

Toby developed a lifelong passion for cars at the young age of 15, particularly 1932 Fords. He took great pride in restoring these classic vehicles and enjoyed participating in car shows across the country. During his retirement, he was an active member of the Low Rollers of Tucson.

In addition to his professional and personal interests, Toby dedicated nearly two decades to coaching basketball in Mercer. He worked with both middle and high school programs, leading the girls’ teams for several years before ultimately coaching the boys’ team. His leadership, discipline, and genuine care for his players positively impacted countless young athletes and their families.

Toby is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Margie (Klick) Richards; his daughter, Suzanne (John) Bell; his son, Jeffrey (Chelsea) Richards; and his five cherished granddaughters, Lily and Cecilia Bell, and Reighlynn, Leighton, and Magnolia Richards. He is also survived by his sister, Karen (Charlie) Watts; his brothers, Bruce (Missy) Richards and Joseph Richards; sisters-in-law Jeanette Krstolich, Therese Castiglioni-Klick, Vivian Klick, Anne Williams, Patricia (Mark) Otto, Blythe Richards, and Jennifer Lytle Richards; brother-in-law Henry Klick; as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Bertha Richards; his brothers, Randall and Ross Richards; his parents-in-law, Henry and Helen Klick; his brothers-in-law, James and George Klick, and H. Glenn Williams; and his sister-in-law, Laura (Richards) Kabesko.

A memorial service and burial will be held in Mercer, Wisconsin this summer.

The Richards and Bell families extend their heartfelt gratitude to the many friends and loved ones in Tucson who offered support, kindness, and companionship during difficult times, especially when distance made it challenging for immediate family to be present.
