Obituary for Richard C. Rowland
Richard C. Rowland, beloved father, proud veteran, accomplished aviator, and a man of quiet strength and unwavering character, passed away peacefully on April 19, 2026, his 89th birthday.
Born in Tennessee during the Great Depression, our dad was shaped by hardship early in life. From those beginnings came the qualities that defined him; resilience, self-reliance, humility, and a work ethic that never wavered. He carried those with him through every chapter of his life.
As a teenager, he was later moved to New York to escape the poverty of Tennessee and finish school. From there, he answered the call to serve in the United States Army with the 11th Airborne Division, a chapter he was deeply proud of. His time in the Army helped set his course west, where he found both his calling and his home.
That calling was aviation. From flying tours over the Grand Canyon to managing complex operations involving both fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters, our dad built a life in the skies. But it was more than a career, it was where he built his family, where he found joy, and where many of his best memories were made. He loved the Canyon, its ever-changing light and shadows, and the freedom of flight it gave him.
Eventually, he settled in the desert of Tucson, where he found peace, stability, and a true sense of belonging. He embraced the spirit of the West, its independence, its quiet strength, and its enduring beauty. Above all else, he was our father.
He raised six sons, not by telling us how to live, but by showing us. He taught us to work hard, to stand on our own, to be honest, to give more than we take, and to carry ourselves with humility. He never asked for help, but he was always the first to give it. His dry sense of humor and his way of pointing out life’s ironies are things we will carry with us always. Everything we are, in so many ways, traces back to him.
He was married to our mother for 20-plus years. In the years that followed, their relationship evolved into a deep and enduring friendship. In his final chapter, she stood beside him once again, offering care, comfort, and unwavering presence. It was a quiet full circle, and we are grateful for the love and dignity she brought to his final days.
In his final days, we were able to be with him, speak to him, holding his hand, and returning to him the love he gave us throughout our lives. It was a peaceful passing, and for that we are grateful.
Dad, we honor you. We thank you. And we will carry you forward in the way we live our lives. You will be deeply missed, forever loved, and always honored. This is our Farewell Blessing for you as you move on to your next chapter with the Almighty:
“The Lord bless you and keep you;
the Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you
;the Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace.”
— Numbers 6:24–26
