Monica Shoon Len Yee-Mitchell
Monica passed away peacefully on June 3, 2026, at Peppi’s House Hospice in Tucson, Arizona, at the age of 73. As a Registered Nurse, she dedicated her life to the compassionate care and service of others. As a mother, grandmother, and wife, she was loving and supportive, always putting the needs of others before her own. Her husband and children fondly remember the day she revived two young girls who had drowned in a swimming pool in Indonesia, a reflection of both her professional skill and her instinctive commitment to helping others. Monica loved animals, especially cats, and cared for many throughout her life. She also volunteered at the Pima Animal Care Center in Tucson, where she continued her lifelong commitment to caring for those in need.
Monica graduated from the Colchester District School of Nursing in Essex, England, and completed her midwifery training at Barratt Maternity Hospital in Northampton. Her first nursing position was at Black Notley Hospital in Braintree, Essex. Her career as a Registered Nurse spanned 48 years and took her from England to Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Connecticut, Virginia, and Arizona. Throughout her career, she was known for her clinical skill, reliability, compassion, and dedication to her patients.
Before suffering the devastating strokes in June 2024 that left her paralyzed and unable to speak, Monica had served for four and a half years as a Registered Nurse at Devon Gables Rehabilitation Center in Tucson, Arizona.
The daughter of a Cantonese father, Yee Wah Hing, MBE, and a Hakka mother, Tsew Nyuk Lan, Monica was born on November 28, 1952, in Sandakan, British North Borneo (now the Malaysian state of Sabah). She was the sixth of eight children. Monica met her husband of nearly 45 years, Arthur Hayne Mitchell, in Sandakan through the Hash House Harriers running club. They were married two years later in Singapore on July 17, 1981.
She is also survived by her devoted children, Katharine Len Yee Mitchell (Zachary), Andrew Hayne Mitchell (Elizabeth), and Thomas Earle Mitchell (Kirsten), and by her adored grandchildren, Noah Covach Mitchell, Bodhi Kennedy Mitchell, and Maren Eleanora Mitchell.
In addition to her husband, children, and grandchildren, Monica is survived by her siblings, who reside in Malaysia, Singapore, and Canada: Michael Yee Shun Phin (Siew Len), Thomas Yee Shun Min (Siew Lian), Charles Yee Shun Ken (Claire), Phillip Yee Shun Keong (Jane), Victoria Yee Soon Kun, and Alice Yee Soon Jin (Ah Liau). She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Katharine Mitchell Nevins (Neil) of Warner, New Hampshire, and by many nieces and nephews living in Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, and the United States. She was preceded in death by her brother, Joseph Yee Shun Kong, and her brother-in-law, Henry Milnor Mitchell.
We wish to express our gratitude to the staff of St. Joseph’s Hospital, Foothills Rehabilitation Center, Tucson Medical Center, and Peppi’s House Hospice for the compassionate care they provided Monica throughout the last two years of her life.
Monica's love, strength, and generous spirit will remain with us always. She will forever be in our hearts.
