Marilynn Thompson Johnston, 86, formerly of Northfield, Illinois, and later Tucson, Arizona, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2026, with her children by her side.
Marilynn was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert Bruce Johnston. She was the loving mother of Mike Johnston (Kelly) and Shelly Tanner (Alan). She was a proud grandmother to Kelsey Becksfort (Ryan), Kristine Richards (Trent), Kolby Johnston, Kenna Johnston, Ryan Tanner, and Dana Tanner, and was also blessed with three great-grandchildren. She cherished every moment spent with her family, who were her greatest pride and joy. She also held dear her brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and extended family.
The only child of Ralph (“Bud”) and Maxine Thompson, Marilynn was born June 25, 1939 in Pontiac, Illinois. She graduated from Evanston Township High School and later attended the University of Colorado, where she became a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority and met the love of her life, Bru. She graduated with a degree in Education, but always dreamed of being a flight attendant.
Throughout her life, Marilynn devoted herself to serving others through volunteer work and community involvement. She generously gave her time to her church, local library, and garden club, and was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. Her compassionate heart extended to animals as well, and she shared her love openly with the many dogs she knew and cared for throughout her life.
A woman of deep faith, Marilynn found joy and inspiration in God's creation. She loved spending time outdoors, appreciating nature's beauty, and traveling to new places. Known for her vibrant personality, positive outlook, and wonderful sense of fun, she brought warmth, laughter, and friendship wherever she went. A devoted friend, her kindness and caring spirit touched the lives of many.
Mare Mare will be deeply missed by her family and friends and lovingly remembered for her compassion, faith, joyful spirit, and dedication to others. May her memory be a blessing and her spirit live on in the hearts of all her knew her.
A service with family and close friends will be held in Northfield at a future date.
