In Loving Memory of Lucian Erle “Bubba” Slagle Jr.

Lucian Erle “Bubba” Slagle Jr., 80, passed away on Sunday, October 25, 2026, in Tucson, Arizona. He was born on November 25, 1945, in Midland, Texas, to Janice Duerer Slagle and Lucian Erle Slagle Sr. He spent part of his early childhood in Hobbs, New Mexico, before moving to New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1955. Bubba graduated from Martin Behrman High School in 1964 and went on to attend the University of Southwestern Louisiana. Following his graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy, beginning a distinguished military career that would take him and his family across the country and around the world.

During his Navy career, Bubba served his country with dedication as a Naval Flight Officer and participated in Operation Desert Storm in 1991. In 1976, he flew as a Radar Intercept Officer (RIO) in the F-4J Phantom II with Fighter Squadron 21 (VF-21), the Freelancers, aboard the USS Ranger. His years of service shaped much of his life and brought him lasting friendships, unforgettable experiences, and a deep sense of pride in his Navy family.

A Love for All Time

Bubba and Sandy met in late 1983 and instantly knew they had found something special in one another. Bubba knew he wanted to spend the rest of his life with Sandy. Sandy, being uniquely herself, made her intentions clear: she was quitting her job, pulling her son out of school, marrying Bubba, and moving with him to San Diego, California. And Bubba did exactly what he wanted to do—he married her and made that life together a reality.

They were married on August 4, 1984, beginning a beautiful journey filled with love, adventure, and shared memories. They moved their family to San Diego while Bubba was stationed at Miramar

Naval Air Station as a Lieutenant Commander (LCDR) and flight instructor. Both became actively involved in the squadron community, where they formed lifelong friendships and shared some of the most meaningful experiences of their lives.

In early 1987, Bubba was transferred to Point Mugu, and the family settled in Camarillo, California, where they lived until 1993. After Bubba retired from the Navy, they moved to Seattle, Washington, and embraced the next chapter of their lives together.

In 2000, Bubba accepted a position with Rockwell Collins, bringing them to Portland, Oregon. In 2010, they moved to Tucson, Arizona, where they finally settled into retirement and enjoyed the wonderful life they had worked so hard to build. They embraced their new home, made many close friends, and continued creating memories together.

Through every move, every new beginning, and every chapter of their lives, Bubba and Sandy shared a life built on love, commitment, and the adventures they experienced side by side.

A Friend to All at the Elks

Bubba remained active in the Elks, which became his second home. It was a place where friendships grew, stories were shared, and a familiar face could always be found. He built many strong and meaningful relationships there, friendships he deeply cherished.

Those who knew Bubba at the Elks will remember his corner chair, along with his ever-present pen and paper, which he used to keep track of inventory. These familiar routines were part of what made him who he was and a beloved member of the Elks community.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the Elks for the continued love, kindness, and support they have shown throughout this difficult time. Their friendship and compassion have meant more than words can express.
