John Sand Albertsen
April 26, 1934 – June 4, 2026
John Sand Albertsen, age 92, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2026, in Tucson, Arizona. He was born on April 26, 1934, in Deadwood, South Dakota, to Danish immigrant parents, Kristen J. Albertsen and Nikoline “Colleen” Albertsen. John’s life was a remarkable journey defined by service, curiosity, and a deep appreciation for both family and adventure.
He grew up in Evanston, Illinois, just outside of Chicago, where his early years helped shape the disciplined and inquisitive spirit that would guide him throughout his life. He went on to attend Northwestern University, setting the foundation for what would become an extraordinary military career.
John proudly served nearly 22 years in the United States Air Force, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. His service in the Strategic Air Command (SAC) placed him at the heart of critical missions during a defining era in our nation’s history. He flew aerial refueling missions, served with the elite Nightwatch program, and concluded his distinguished career as Chief Navigator for the U-2 squadron. His dedication, precision, and leadership left a lasting mark on those who served alongside him.
Beyond his military life, John embraced the simple joys that brought him happiness. He had a passion for sports cars and was an active member of several car clubs, finding camaraderie and excitement in the open road and the craftsmanship of the vehicles he loved. He also loved tennis and became a certified USTA teaching professional, and an accomplished golfer with a side passion for photography and travel. Those who knew him will remember his quick-witted sense of humor, fun-loving spirit, and the steady presence he brought to every room.
John was preceded in death by his first wife, Jimanna Albertsen, passing on November 3, 1998, and by his sister Edith Albertsen. He is survived by his second wife, Donna Hansen-Albertsen.
Also survived by his children and their spouses, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; Mark Albertsen (Misty Albertsen) and Kristen Scalpone (Dennis Scalpone); grandchildren, Chad Albertsen, Rick Albertsen (Courtney Albertsen), Ashli Albertsen, Michelle Scalpone, and Julie Scalpone; and his great-grandchildren, Evelyn Albertsen, Wade Albertsen, Alice Albertsen, and Avery Albertsen. Kristin Chism Albertsen, mother of Wade Albertsen, is remembered with love. As an amazing father, son, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather his love, spirit, and legacy live on through each of them.
He is also survived by the Hansen family children and their spouses, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren with whom he shared many happy and memorable years.
John lived a life filled with family, friends, faith, service, integrity, quiet strength and a genuine love of life and laughter bringing a smile to every room. He will be deeply missed by all who had the blessing of knowing him.
In lieu of flowers, John wished for donations to be made to Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières) at www.doctorswithoutborders.org, honoring his lifelong spirit of service and compassion for others.
