Donald James Chisman passed away on January 13th, 2026 at the age of 86 after a brief illness. He was born on January 19, 1939, to Harold and Daisy Chisman. He graduated from Central High School in 1957 and served honorably in the United States Marine Corps from January 1958 through December 1960. Don began his law enforcement career as a Dane County Police Officer in 1965, serving until 1981, after which he became a deputy sheriff. He retired on May 28, 1993, following many years of dedicated service.
Don married Erva in 1973, beginning a loving partnership that lasted 53 years. He enjoyed swimming, biking, taking walks, spending countless hours mowing lawns in Wisconsin and replanting and saving cactuses in Arizona. Don deeply loved his family and found joy in helping others. A caring and devoted father, he achieved many admirable milestones throughout his life and career, but he was also a remarkable teacher. From swimming lessons and water safety at the pool to the most thorough driving instruction, Don always equipped his children and grandchildren with tools for success. We are proud to have shared in his life.
Don is survived by his beloved wife, Erva; his daughters at heart, Kathi Mohlman (Craig), Kris Heckman (Edward), and Karen Spahn; and his grandchildren, Alisa, Kiersten, Jordan, Lanae, Wesley, Kayla, Mikki, and Tim. He is also survived by nine great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was joined in eternal rest by his beloved brother Richard Hodges, the next day on January 14th.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother and sister-in-law, Keith and Dutchie Chisman; and his granddaughter, Nicole.
A memorial service will be held in Wisconsin at a later date.
